Abhay Thakur
Ambassador of India to Myanmar
Abhay Thakur was born in September 1969 in Raipur. A graduate from VNIT Nagpur and post-graduate from IIM Mumbai (formerly NITIE), he worked with Hindustan Lever Ltd. briefly before joining the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) in 1992. His initial diplomatic assignments were at the Indian Missions in Moscow (1992-94 and 2005-08), London (1998-2001) and Tel Aviv (2001-2005) in different capacities, whereafter he served as the Consul General of India in Ho Chi Minh City (2010-13).
At the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi, he worked as the Director in External Affairs Minister’s Office (2008-10) and as Joint Secretary (North) dealing with Nepal and Bhutan affairs (2013-16).
Abhay Thakur served as the High Commissioner of India to Mauritius (2016- 19), and as the High Commissioner of India to Nigeria (2019-2021; with concurrent accreditation to Benin, Cameroon, Chad and ECOWAS Commission).
Thereafter, as Additional Secretary/OSD(G20) in the Ministry of External Affairs (2021-2024), he was responsible for all substantive G20 matters, including during India’s G20 Presidency in 2023.
Abhay Thakur assumed charge as the Ambassador of India to Myanmar in April 2024.
He is fluent in English and Hindi, and speaks Russian. He is married to Dr. (Mrs.) Surabhi Thakur and they have a daughter and a son.

अभय ठाकुर का जन्म सितंबर 1969 में रायपुर में हुआ था। वीएनआईटी नागपुर से स्नातक और आईआईएम मुंबई (पूर्व में एनआईटीआईई) से स्नातकोत्तर, उन्होंने 1992 में भारतीय विदेश सेवा (आईएफएस) में कार्यरत होने से पूर्व, कुछ समय के लिए हिंदुस्तान लीवर लिमिटेड में काम किया । उनके प्रारंभिक राजनयिक कार्यभार मॉस्को (1992-94 और 2005-08), लंदन (1998-2001) और तेल अवीव (2001-2005) में भारतीय मिशनों में थे, जिसके बाद उन्होंने हो ची मिन्ह सिटी (2010-13) में भारत के कौंसल जनरल के रूप में कार्य किया।
विदेश मंत्रालय, नई दिल्ली में, उन्होंने विदेश मंत्री कार्यालय में निदेशक (2008-10) और नेपाल और भूटान मामलों के लिए ज़िम्मेदार संयुक्त सचिव (उत्तर) के रूप में (2013-16) काम किया।
तत्पश्चात अभय ठाकुर मॉरीशस में भारत के उच्चायुक्त (2016-19) और नाइजीरिया में भारत के उच्चायुक्त (2019-2021; बेनिन, कैमरून, चाड और इकोवास आयोग की समवर्ती मान्यता के साथ) रहे।
वे विदेश मंत्रालय (2021-2024) में अतिरिक्त सचिव/ओएसडी (जी20) के रूप में, 2023 में भारत की जी20 अध्यक्षता सहित, सभी अर्थपूर्ण जी20 मामलों के लिए समग्र रूप से जिम्मेदार रहे।
अभय ठाकुर ने अप्रैल 2024 में म्यांमार में भारत के राजदूत का कार्यभार संभाला।
वे अंग्रेजी और हिंदी में पारंगत हैं और रूसी भाषा बोलते हैं। उनका विवाह डॉ. (श्रीमती) सुरभि ठाकुर से हुआ है और उनकी एक बेटी और एक बेटा है।
